Long-time art gallery director Harry Stendhal has been a presence in the art world since the establishment of the Stendhal Gallery in New York City in 1990, first in SoHo and later in Chelsea. Mr. Stendhal strives to present innovative, museum-quality exhibitions featuring the work of both historic and contemporary masters working in a variety of media and disciplines, especially works of socio-cultural importance. His gallery has featured works of such notable artists as George Maciunas, Hans Richter, George Brecht, and Andy Warhol.
Over the years Harry Stendhal has developed a deep appreciation of George Maciunas, the founder of the Fluxus movement. In 2009, Mr. Stendhal established George Maciunas Foundation Inc., to preserve "the work and legacy of George Maciunas, as well as [to ensure] the protection of copyrights and intellectual property." The Foundation is the principal organization with copyright ownership of George Maciunas' body of work.
As the curator and director of the Foundation, Mr. Stendhal develops exhibitions through which he seeks to build upon Mr. Maciunas' aesthetic theories to create tools for social change.
